1. Choose 2 vocabulary words and look up their definitions in a dictionary. Find the definition that most closely matches how each word is used in the book. Copy the definitions into your journal, and underline the word. Identify which dictionary you used. Write sentences for each word that shows you know what it means. Underline the vocabulary word in each sentence.
2. If you were living at the time of the setting of the book, what inventions would you miss? What might you like about the lack of modern technology? How would life be different for you as a child then compared to now? (paragraph)
3. Who is the immigrant family J.D. and Tom meet in chapter 5? Where are they from? How do others in town treat them, and why do you think they are treated this way? (paragraph)
